THE HAYMARKET SQUARES
Blending acoustic instruments, fast tempos, rich harmonies and rabble-rousing lyrics, The Haymarket Squares have been playing punkgrass for the people since 2009. “They’re smart. They’re funny. They’re raging against the machine in four-part harmony,” says The Arizona Republic of the group’s incisive lyrics and boundless live energy.
RUN BOY RUN
Existing comfortably in the tension between tradition and the musical frontier, Run Boy Run’s all-acoustic format blends bluegrass, folk and the old-timey American vernacular with touches of classical and turn-of-the-century details. Based in Tucson, the band has been making friends and fans nationwide with an open-ended musical approach and wonderful stage presence.
LAURA & THE KILLED MEN
Laura and the Killed Men steep their songs in the lore of the American West, refracting its triumphs and tragedies through an intimate lens. Laura Kepner-Adney, the lead singer and guitarist in the Tucson-based band, shades her spellbinding voice with echoes of country and Appalachia, while highlighting the band’s connection to Arizona’s unforgiving environment.
DJ SHANE KENNEDY
Drawing from what may be the deepest record collection in Arizona, Shane Kennedy offers eclectic sets featuring vintage R&B, jazz noir, groovy French pop, country soul, 70’s pop, Afro-jazz, cocktail exotica, early New Orleans funk, skronky tonk, girl group, southern soul, cool covers and obscure originals.
Located in the basement of a building built in 1949, Valley Bar continues the tradition of great music on Central Avenue, adding a cool, speakeasy vibe to a place where Soundgarden and Bad Brains once played. Great sound, amazing food and potent cocktails make this the perfect venue for the inaugural Gritty City Stringfest.
